Did you know…

that just under 50% of women never leave home with a USB memory stick? Reading an article in the green guide this week I was not surprised that 95% own a mobile phone [I mean really, who doesn't]. I thought 81% with a digital camera was actually slightly low, though maybe thats just cause of my age group, I believe we’re called the iGeneration for a reason.

iGeneration is one of many nick names for my generation, some people might even consider me part of Generation Y, [but only just]. I’m somewhere inbetween Y and i [aka the internet generation] because I do have some memories of a pre-internet world but I was born in the 90s [by a day or 5].

But anyway, back to the original point of this, the article that prompted this post is talking about the design revolution in technology, lead by Apple of course, that is fuelled by the femal geek, the female who wants a phone that looks good AND does everything and more. We want a digital camera we can fit in any handbag, an iPod [or some derivative thereof] that holds more music than we can poke a stick at. We NEED entertainment like the cute Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS Lite both pretty, sleek and useful. Unless I’m, very much mistaken the DS is the one where the ad features a female whose probably about 20, which I don’t think I’ve ever seen before with this kind of product.

Clearly, with Apple dominating in the mp3 and computer side of things, I think the biggest market with room for growth is clearly mobiles phones, though Apple are even making headway there. Personally the Prada phone for LG tickles my fancy though at $999 I’ll be admiring it from afar for a while yet. This article poaches a little fact from another article in the same supplement that talks about the lack of female skewed radio called the 80% minority. Both these articles make a point that 80% of buying decisions are made or influenced by women, and yet many of the big wigs are scared of ‘alienating’ 50% of their market [ie. men]. In our voyeuristic, narcissistic society, materialism is back, geek is the new chic and we’re on the cusp of this long awaited technolgical revolution. In the 50’s it was dishwashers and microwaves. The noughties and beyond are bringing advancements like these, completely unforseen and completely marketable, and once again their aimed at women. But this time the women are gadget savvy business women instead of stay at home wives and mothers.

Women these days are gradually becoming more likely to buy a MacBook, an iPod or a new phone than this seasons ‘It’ bag by good old MJ [Marc Jacobs] or Balenciaga as seen on Micha, Nicole or MK&A.
